The Story of Modyza: Born in Dublin, Woven for the World

It was the rainiest spring Dublin had seen in years—April 2004—when Marina Vos, then a 24-year-old design graduate from the National College of Art and Design, decided she wouldn’t wait for permission to chase her dream.

From a tiny Georgian flat tucked between the old brick alleys of Portobello, Marina stitched the first prototypes of what would become Modyza: a women's fashion label built not around trends, but around truth. Her truth. And the truth of women like her—bold, intuitive, endlessly evolving. Dublin, with its poetic grit and creative heartbeat, shaped Modyza from day one. The city’s contradictions—its soft spoken charm and sharp edges, its stormy skies and sudden light—became part of the brand’s identity. “Fashion should be like Dublin,” Marina once said. “Unexpected. Honest. Beautiful in its rawness.”

By 2007, Marina was joined by Lina O’Shea, an old classmate with a brilliant sense for fabric and form, and later by Sorcha Byrne, a tech-savvy innovator who believed the internet would change the face of fashion forever. Together, from a small studio near St. Stephen’s Green, they launched Modyza’s first online shop—a simple site with a radical idea: clothing that connected emotionally. What they offered was more than pieces of clothing. Modyza offered pieces of self-expression. The flowing Isolde Dress that moved like music. The tailored Maeve Coat that gave you posture. The Orla Blouse that became a quiet form of armor in a noisy world.

By 2011, Modyza’s audience had grown beyond Ireland. From Berlin to Barcelona, Copenhagen to Cape Town, women resonated with the story Modyza was telling—a story not about perfection, but about presence. And still, the soul of the brand stayed in Dublin. Modyza’s flagship studio—now located in a restored warehouse along the Grand Canal—buzzes with creative energy. The team, still entirely female-led, works with independent European ateliers to produce limited collections that are both sustainable and timeless.

Every piece is ethically made. Every fabric is thoughtfully sourced. And every drop is designed to make a woman feel more herself—not someone else.

Today, Modyza is worn in more than 40 countries. But its roots remain deep in Irish soil. In the misty mornings and ocean winds of Dublin, in the poetry of everyday women, and in the hands of a team that still believes fashion should be more than fabric—it should be felt.
